December is a magical month everywhere in Europe and Paris is definitely one of the best places to visit at Christmas time.

Paris in December is a winter wonderland, with festive decorations, holiday markets, and a cozy atmosphere.

This also means that it can be very cold and for this reason, it’s important to pack properly.

In this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about packing for Paris. This includes which items to take but also some tips (from a French girl, me!) to stay stylish.

Parisians love fashion and they don’t really dress casually so I will also include recommendations to look stylish and blend in.

What is the Weather Like in Paris in December?

paris in december

December in Paris is cold, with temperatures hovering between 3°C and 7°C (37°F to 45°F). Rain is common, and you may even experience some snow but it’s quite rare.

The days are short, and the nights can be quite chilly, so layering and warm clothing are essential.

Essential Packing List for Paris in December

You will find below the ultimate list of things to pack for Paris in December. Please bear in mind that the most important thing is to use layers. Make sure you take a lot of layers to keep yourself warm.

Clothing

  • Winter Coat: This is the most important piece of clothing you will need in Paris. A Good Winter Coat! You can ppt for a wool coat (if you want to do like the French) or a down-filled coat to keep you warm in the chilly weather. These are a bit less common in France but they will keep you warm and that’s what matters. In French, we call them ‘doudounes’ and they have been becoming more popular in recent years. A coat with a hood can also protect you from unexpected rain and wind.
  • Knit Sweaters: Thick, cozy knit sweaters are perfect to stay warm and look good.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: Great for layering and can be worn under sweaters or alone indoors.
  • Tank tops: these are great as an extra layer. I usually wear them underneath my long sleeve t-shirts since nobody can see them and they really provide extra warmth.
  • Trousers and Jeans: Try to choose heavier fabric, no light trousers in December in Paris! I would recommend wearing neutral colours since the French tend to like these more.
  • Winter Dresses with Tights: Heavier dresses paired with thick tights can keep you warm while looking chic.
  • Skirts with tights. Winter skirts paired with tights and a jumper are also a good option.
  • Underwear and socks
  • Pyjamas: Choose warm, cozy pyjamas, as your accommodation might be on the cooler side.

Shoes

  • Leather Boots: These are ideal in Paris since they are what Parisians tend to wear the most and they are comfortable. You can opt for high boots or ankle boots. Both options will work with any outfit and should be comfortable to walk on the cobblestones.
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: I recommend sneakers such as Airforce or Reebok. Make sure they are not in fabric so they can stand the rain.

No matter what, it’s important to wear comfortable shoes. You will be walking a lot in Paris and if you haven’t broken into the shoes, you shouldn’t take them.

Also, make sure they are quite warm and have a bit of a thick sole, that will keep you warmer.

Bags

  • Suitcase or Travel Backpack
  • Handbag or Stylish Backpack
  • Money Belt: this is perfect to keep your money safe since you can keep it under your coat. Nobody will see it and pickpockets won’t be able to reach it.

Accessories

  • Scarf, Hat, and Gloves: A wool scarf, warm hat, and gloves are essential to protect against the cold.
  • Small Umbrella: Keep a compact umbrella handy for sudden rain showers.
  • Jewellery: Stick to simple, non-valuable pieces due to the risk of pickpockets.

Electronics

Paperwork

  • Passport & Copies
  • Travel Insurance Documents
  • Hotel Reservation & Itinerary
  • Bank Card + Revolut or Wise Card

☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️

Wear a nice winter dress with tights and leather boots, with a long winter coat of course. Add a scarf, hat, and gloves for extra warmth.

☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️

A long sleeve t-shirt with a cozy knit sweater under your winter coat, with trousers or jeans and ankle boots. Of course, always take a scarf, hat and gloves.

A waterproof winter coat over layers (tank top + long sleeve t-shirt), with leather boots and a sturdy umbrella. Make sure to wear your scarf, hat and gloves as well.

Things Not to Wear in Paris in December

  • Light Jackets: They won’t provide enough warmth in the cold December weather.
  • Summer or Lightweight Clothes: Paris is cold in December, and lightweight clothing will leave you shivering.
  • Open-Toe Shoes: Not suitable for cold, wet, or potentially snowy conditions.
  • Thin, Non-Waterproof Shoes: These won’t protect you from the cold and damp weather.
